Matt Lewis
"Tribute to Elvis"
Matt Lewis

I was born in Kirksville, Missouri and lived most of my life in Lee's Summit, a suburb of Kansas City. I still have a permanent address in Lee's Summit, but my real home is on the road. I went to college for five years with dreams of becoming a school teacher. I decided to drop school and become a full time entertainer. Imagine my parents reaction when I came home saying "Mom, Dad I dropped out of school to become an Elvis impersonator!" Someone once told me that if you have something to fall back on, you probably will fall back on it. So dropping school really gave me no choice but to succeed in this career.

A lot of people want to know what I did before I became an Elvis impersonator. My first job was at the age of 15 as a dishwasher at a local restaurant. Then I spent f years entertaining at a local theme park in Kansas City, called "Stax of Wax", a 50's and 60's rock-n-roll revival. I was always doing odd jobs like parking cars at night, selling tickets to the theme park in the mornings, and even tried painting houses once. All to make an extra buck. At age 19, a local radio station awarded me a trip to Graceland for taking first place in "The Best Elvis in Kansas City" contest. I then signed with a local agent, and was soon working all over the country.

My first impersonation of Elvis was for a school talent when I was 12. I took 2nd place and from then on, the community began hiring me for parties.

Working as an entertainer is like walking the high wire without a safety net. It can be very scary, with no health benefits, workers comp, sick leave or paid days off. You really are on your own, and the competition is fierce. Like the high wire, it is important to not look down, and keep on pressing toward the mark. Be a risk taker. Never give up, and when times are tough, learn to adapt and survive. These challenges have made me stronger. I think my greatest desire in life is to bring joy to others and make them smile. If I can bring a smile to the faces of my audience, it makes me feel like I am doing something to brighten up the world.
